This morning, BB was all about making up songs. First, she sang us a song about her daddy's minis (miniature figures that he uses to play Dungeons & Dragons). She sang it so fast that I didn't really follow the narrative thread, though the chorus of "Minis Minis Minis MINIS!" was unmistakable.
(Side note: it is painfully cute to see how excited the kids get about S's minis. He has quite a collection now, after having discovered the allure of buying them cheap on Ebay, and each new arrival of a little box in the mail is accompanied by great excitement on the part of both BB and BJ. They love to ask S for permission to play with his minis, and they are unfazed by the rather gruesome aspect of some of the monsters. What matters to them is, first, whether the mini is a "good guy" or a "bad guy." If it's a bad guy, they have to catch it and take it to jail. Good guys get piled up on the toy train, arranged inside the Fisher Price barn, or paraded around the Fisher Price castle. Until the bad guy threatens to eat them because it has escaped from jail. I know that S has a greater plan at work -- namely, to turn his offspring into future partners in exploring dungeons -- but even knowing that, it's charming to see. When I look past the fact that they are frolicking about with fierce dragons and hulking monsters and skeletal figures. I'm betting Fisher Price has never before seen the like!)
After serenading us about the minis, BB announced that she wanted to teach me a new lullaby. Once again, she sang it too fast and garbled for me to follow, so when she was done I asked her to tell it to me slowly:
Lullaby by BB
When birds are up on a branch
When it's dark outside
And cars go by
And sleep my birds
When ducks go by
And boats go by
And fish go by
When birds go by
When owls go by
When people walk by
When you hear instruments
When you hear the waves go, splash! Splash!
When you hear people singing
When you hear people writing
When you hear people yelling at the library
And the librarian says, "Don't yell! Be quiet!"
Go to sleep my girls and boys.
THE END
She repeated it to me, including the "THE END" part, so it must truly be what she meant. And when I sang it back to her, she was utterly delighted. (The tune didn't seem to matter, interestingly enough.) She's asked that I sing it to her tonight. We'll see how BJ feels about that!
